Scottish Platystomatidae

There are only two species of Platystomatidae included in the British fauna, Platystoma seminationis (Fabricius, 1775) and Rivellia syngenesiae (Fabricius, 1781).

Only Rivellia syngenesiae is presently known from Scotland and is, I believe, rather under recorded.  It has certainly been collected from low herbage in country lanes and adjacent to pasture or meadow and there may be an association with leguminous plants, on which the larvae are reported to feed.

The following data is derived from specimens and literature records held at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh (NMSE).  Literature citations accumulated into an electronic database at the Museum, regularly updated as new records appear in the literature.

Platystoma seminationis (Fabricius, 1775)

NMSE – no Scottish specimens
SIRI – no Scottish Records

Rivellia syngenesiae (Fabricius, 1781)

The data suggests a distribution up along the West coast as far as the Clyde and Forth Valleys, from which Rivellia syngenesiae disverges, westward toward Oban, northwards to Inverness and eastwards into Perthshire.

The sparcity of the data (only 16 records) invokes a low confidence in this distribution and suggests that Rivellia syngenesiae may be much more widespread.
